“A sister is a little
bit of childhood that can never be lost.”
~Marion

She has annoyed you, frustrated you, and raided your closet
on more than one occasion. And, although you can’t prove it, you are sure she
is responsible for the Brussels sprout incident that was entirely blamed on
you.
On the other hand, she has applauded you, inspired you, and
held you close when you cried. And you’re not quite sure how it happened, but
the teen magazine you wanted but couldn’t afford ended up on your pillow.
Your sister is a mixed bag of wonderful. During her younger
years, she may have ruffled your feathers now and then, but in the long run she
proved to be a keeper.
I propose that we celebrate the crazy beauty of sisters. Whether
you live close to each other and will be able to see the mischievous twinkle in
her eye, or you’ll rely on your cell phone or the internet to share a special
day, you can enjoy memories of your childhood, dreams of the future, and the
wonder of today.
Here are some ideas for a fantastic Sisters Day Out.
1) Visit favorite restaurants for a progressive breakfast,
lunch, or dinner. Enjoy appetizers at your favorite restaurant, onion rings at
your favorite drive in, burgers at the pub, then sundaes at your favorite ice
cream parlor.
2) Enjoy a couple of hours playing games with each other on
the Web. Set up your Webcam and mic, take some video pix, and share a sparkling
fruit juice toast to celebrate sisterly love.
3) Send Sis a list of your favorite books along with a copy
of your all-time favorite book. Jot down a favorite childhood memory on the
inside cover of the book or tuck in a favorite family photo to be used as a
bookmark.
4) Take time out of your busy lives to enjoy the activities
you loved as children. Plan a day together to go bird watching, hiking, bike
riding, kayaking or swimming in the creek.
5) Sign up for a class together. Learn new skills in
photography, painting, pottery, archery — whatever you have always wanted to
try but never got around to.
6) Think pink. Take in anything and everything pink! Try out
manicures with pink nail polish, cupcakes topped in pink, new pink t-shirts,
pink journals, pink cocktails, pink cotton candy…and when you’re done, deliver
a bouquet of pink roses to someone who deserves a hug.
7) Rent a sports car for the day. Drive around the
countryside with the convertible top down and the wind in your hair. Be spontaneous
and explore a new town, try a new restaurant, seek out an adventure. If you
spot a candy store, stop to purchase some of your childhood favorites.
8) Compete in a scavenger hunt shopping trip. Have a friend
or family member choose a few inexpensive items to search for at the store,
then get to shopping. As you find each treasure, take a snapshot of it and send
the photo via cell phone to the competitors. Loser buys the bubble gum!
9) Sleepovers never go out of style. Invite your sisters,
friends and their sisters, your daughters, and your moms. See how many girls
you can pile into your living room. For an extra splurge, purchase matching pjs
or t-shirts, pick up facial products in fun colors, and plan prizes for the
wackiest slippers, the craziest bed hair, and the loudest snore.
10) Create your favorite family meal. Shop for the
ingredients together, share memories while you cook, then share the meal as
part of a family celebration. During the meal, make a toast to your parents,
your families, and your futures.
